Why Our Bodies Develop Allergies
Most people say we get allergies because our immune system mistakes harmless things like dust or some foods for dangerous threats. But why does this happen? Let’s explore this question from a holistic, functional medicine perspective.
IMMUNITY

If someone overreacts to a commonly harmless substance, it may be because of a dysfunctional immune system caused by a leaky gut, a dysfunctional liver, occult infection, and accumulated toxins.
With a leaky gut, larger food particles, toxins, and pathogens can enter the bloodstream, prompting the immune system to release antibodies. Impaired liver function reduces the body's ability to detoxify, while ongoing infections and toxin accumulation can further weaken immune response. Managing these four factors can facilitate managing allergic reactions.
Rarely, some genetic variants can increase sensitivity to specific substances. Individuals with a PON1 gene variant react to pesticides on vegetables, not the vegetables themselves. In such cases, choosing organic is recommended. Additionally, low selenium can further reduce the body's ability to detoxify pesticides.
