Understanding Neurogenic Inflammation: The Critical Role of Fatty Acids

Neurogenic inflammation contributes to various inflammatory diseases, and specific macronutrients and dietary patterns can modulate this process. A balanced diet and supplementation can help manage and reduce neurogenic inflammation.

Neurogenic inflammation is involved in conditions such as migraines, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, pancreatitis, and other pain-related disorders. The process initiates when injured cells release inflammatory mediators that activate group IV afferent fibers (C fibers), which transmit pain and temperature signals to the central nervous system. Activation of these fibers induces nociception, or pain perception. Although this activation contributes to pain, it also facilitates tissue repair and local homeostasis. Nociceptors and group IV afferent fibers can adapt their responses to environmental stimuli, allowing modulation that reduces pain. Furthermore, not all inflammatory mediators intensify inflammation; for example, certain eicosanoids derived from dietary fatty acids can promote tissue healing.

Balancing dietary fatty acids is essential, with a recommended omega-6-to-omega-3 fatty acid ratio of 1:1. Modern diets often contain excessive omega-6 fatty acids, particularly from trans fats in margarine and fried foods, which may exacerbate inflammatory diseases. Health outcomes can be improved by increasing intake of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds, while reducing consumption of omega-6-rich foods such as soy products, potato chips, and certain oils. Supplementation with 1 gram of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) from fish oil is beneficial, provided the supplement is laboratory-tested for heavy metals.

Inflammatory mediators exert both harmful and beneficial effects within the inflammatory process, including facilitating tissue repair. Dietary interventions, particularly including omega-3 fatty acids, can support these healing mechanisms.
