Nutritional Gaps in the Paleo Diet
The Paleo diet has both advantages and disadvantages. Excluding dairy products can benefit individuals with lactose intolerance; however, the diet’s emphasis on high protein intake from animal sources places additional strain on the kidneys. Maintaining a balanced intake of macronutrients is essential for promoting optimal health and reducing the risk of disease.

What is Paleo Diet
The Paleo Diet emphasizes the consumption of high-quality proteins from meat while excluding dairy products, grains, and processed foods. The diet includes wild-caught fish, poultry, eggs, vegetables, fruits, fungi, roots, and nuts. It excludes legumes (such as beans and peanuts), potatoes, added salt, refined sugar, and processed oils. Lower intake of sugar and sodium helps maintain healthy blood sugar levels, regulate blood pressure, and support weight management. The elimination of dairy products also benefits individuals with Lactose Intolerance. However, the diet’s high protein intake places strain on the kidneys. In addition, the fat content of meat and eggs can burden the liver. Excluding legumes may also lead to deficiencies in certain nutrients, specifically the amino acid Methionine.
It is essential to maintain a balanced intake of macronutrients, such as carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Protein cannot be effectively utilized by the body when there is an insufficient intake of carbohydrates and fats. In addition, meat and eggs often carry more pathogens compared with plant-based protein sources such as legumes. For optimal health, a balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables, legumes, grains (e.g., organic black rice), nuts, and seeds is recommended, while limiting dairy products and processed foods.
Paleo Diet and Diseases
Strict adherence to the Paleo Diet is not suitable for individuals with chronic illnesses such as cancer, diabetes, and hypertension. A more appropriate approach is to modify the diet. For example, in cancer management, a low-carbohydrate diet—commonly associated with the Paleo diet—can be beneficial; however, high protein intake from animal sources is not advisable because it can promote tumor growth and metastasis. Instead, protein from plant sources such as nuts and seeds should be included to help prevent muscle wasting, while healthy fats from these foods can also be increased. Processed foods should continue to be avoided.
Similarly, individuals with diabetes and hypertension often benefit from a low-carbohydrate diet, which partially aligns with the Paleo diet’s avoidance of grains. However, a high intake of animal-based protein is not recommended because it can place additional strain on the kidneys and potentially worsen these conditions.
Overall, some aspects of the Paleo Diet—particularly the reduction of refined sugar and processed foods—can be beneficial. Nevertheless, the diet should be adjusted according to individual health needs, as certain chronic illnesses cannot tolerate excessive protein intake.
