A low-carb diet is beneficial for any type of SIBO. Avoid foods high in sugar, such as wheat, bread, and white rice, as well as fruits that are high in sugar, like apricots, bananas, dates, grapes, mangoes, raisins, and raspberries, for the time being.

To heal from SIBO, the first priority is to eliminate the bacterial overgrowth. This can be done through treatments such as natural antimicrobials like emulsified oregano oil and black walnut extract. Herbs like astragalus and echinacea can offer additional immune support, but they’re not recommended for individuals with highly sensitive immune systems.

Some functional medicine practitioners also recommend colloidal silver for severe cases of SIBO. While I haven’t personally tried it, it’s mentioned in the book “Your Longevity Blueprint by Stephanie Gray” and supported by testimonials from people who didn’t respond to oregano or probiotics. According to these sources, colloidal silver is considered safe because it isn’t absorbed into the bloodstream. Once the antimicrobial phase is complete, it’s crucial to reintroduce probiotics to help restore balance to the gut microbiome and support long-term healing.

Chronic SIBO often damages the intestinal lining and contributes to leaky gut. Supporting mucosal healing is key to long-term recovery. Foods rich in glutamine, such as cabbage, can help repair the gut lining. Supplements like L-glutamine, aloe vera, and slippery elm are also beneficial for soothing inflammation and promoting tissue repair.

Detoxification plays a vital role in healing from SIBO. When the digestive system can't fully eliminate toxins, the burden shifts to the liver. Supporting liver function is essential and can be done using herbs like dandelion root, milk thistle, burdock, and artichoke. Additionally, calcium D-glucarate is naturally found in many fruits and vegetables can enhance the body’s ability to detoxify and safely remove harmful substances.

In summary, a low-carb diet, the use of botanical antimicrobials, and proper detoxification support can work together to help heal methane SIBO and restore gut health.
